Early Literacy will be a major focus during your child’s first few years in school. We believe that all children see
themselves as readers and writers. It is our goal to accept children from where they are and take them forward on their literacy
journey. Our kindergarten program will incorporate opportunities for your child to experience all aspects of reading and writing
throughout the school day. Literacy Center Time is one opportunity for
your child to explore reading and writing activities in a small group setting.
What are Kindergarten PALS?
In a busy classroom it is often difficult for the teacher to focus on a small group and still
attend to the needs of the remainder of the class. Kindergarten PALS are volunteers who join the class for Literacy Center
Time. PALS will meet with a group of 4-5 children. They may:
play a literacy skill-based game read a story aloud assist in the computer center with
writing or skill-related software supervise the listening center.
How much time is required?
Literacy
Center Time is scheduled
for approximately one hour. Times may vary with each day. A Kindergarten PAL will volunteer for one hour each week for the
entire school year. It is expected that you will seriously commit to attending each week.
Who can volunteer?
Parents and grandparents are welcome to join us. Your child should understand that this
commitment offers your time to all students. If he/she requires your undivided attention, or will not participate in
activities outside your particular group, volunteering is not suggested. There will be many other opportunities to join our
class during the year.
Do I need any special skills?
Most activities require only group supervision with simple tasks determined by the teacher.
The teacher will provide instruction or support on tasks requiring some additional knowledge. General computer skills are
helpful, but not necessary.
How do I sign up?
Please contact the teacher or indicate your availability on the Literacy Center Time
Schedule. If more than one volunteer is available during the assigned time, the teacher may choose to alternate weeks or allow
for more adult supervision during centers.
