Read Aloud
The teacher read
books to the students to model what good readers sound like to help children learn about book language.
Shared Reading
Poems or stories
are read by all the students reading along at the same time. This helps the children
read smoothly and fluently and demonstrates book and print concepts.
Guided Reading
The students read
in small groups with books on their level. The book is discussed before and after
the reading to help the children with unfamiliar concepts and words, and to discuss strategies the children used to help them
read.
Independent Reading
This is a time when
the students read familiar books on their own without support. The teacher is
available if the student has difficulty
Word Work
Children learn about
letters, how words look, use letter/sound associations, practice site words, talk about chunks in words and use words they
know to help read new words. The teacher guides each lesson.
